(1899-1974) American composer, pianist, and Jazz band leader. He was the originator of big band Jazz music. A pioneer of the Harlem Renaissance, Ellington came to national prominence with performances at the Cotton Club in Harlem, a famous “whites only” New York City nightclub which featured the most popular African American entertainers of the day.
